Dietary supplements, defined as concentrated sources of nutrients designed to complement the diet, and functional foods, known for their benefits beyond basic nutrition, are gaining significant attention. This shift reflects a growing consumer desire to take a proactive approach to their health.

However, this trend raises valid concerns. The FAO report stresses that the safety of active ingredients depends on various factors such as their origin, processing methods, and concentration levels. Moreover, potential interactions with medications, improper dosages, or the use of ingredients that have never been consumed before call for increased caution.

In this context, clear information is crucial. Maura Di Martino, the report's author, emphasizes the importance of clear labeling and rigorous safety evaluations to ensure consumer confidence.
