UN sanctions on Iran could be postponed, say european powers
The United Kingdom, France, and Germany have reiterated that their offer to extend the Iran nuclear deal and delay the reinstatement of UN sanctions remains “on the table,” according to UK Ambassador Barbara Woodward speaking at the United Nations.
The European trio, known as the E3, triggered the “snapback” mechanism on Thursday, a process that could restore UN sanctions against Tehran under the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which is backed by a Security Council resolution set to expire in October.
In July, the E3 offered Iran an extension of the snapback in exchange for specific actions addressing pressing concerns, including compliance with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and managing enriched uranium stockpiles. However, Tehran rejected the proposal, arguing that the Europeans have no authority to reimpose sanctions lifted a decade ago.
“Triggering the snapback does not mark the end of diplomacy. Our offer to extend remains on the table,” Woodward emphasized. The Europeans are urging Iran to reconsider its position and accept a solution that could pave the way for long-term diplomatic resolution.
The snapback mechanism automatically reinstates sanctions after 30 days unless the Security Council passes a resolution confirming their continued suspension. The JCPOA, originally signed by the E3, Iran, the US, China, and Russia, suspends certain international sanctions, although the US withdrew in 2018 and reimposed its own measures.
Western nations continue to suspect that Iran seeks nuclear weapons capabilities, while Tehran maintains its nuclear program is strictly for peaceful, civilian purposes
