Morocco as a model for international reform initiatives
Morocco is increasingly recognized as a "true model" for other nations, driven by a series of robust reform programs, according to Rebeca Grynspan, the Secretary-General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). During a press conference in Geneva, Grynspan emphasized the seriousness and long-term vision underpinning Morocco's reforms.
The UN official highlighted the multifaceted nature of these efforts, noting that Moroccan authorities are investing not only in logistics but also in human resources, skills development, employment, and entrepreneurship within small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which are essential to the social contract.
This high-level meeting, attended by Morocco's permanent ambassador to Geneva, Omar Zniber, provided an opportunity to discuss significant projects spearheaded by the Kingdom. One notable initiative is the Moroccan Atlantic Cooperation Initiative, launched by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, which aims to connect Sahel countries to the Atlantic coast. Grynspan underscored the project's importance for regional integration, economic development, and the peace and stability of Atlantic-facing nations.
Discussions also focused on enhancing cooperation between the Ministry of Economic Inclusion, Small Business, Employment, and Skills and UNCTAD, an organization that plays a crucial role in linking trade, development, and social issues. Minister Younes Sekkouri remarked on the vital necessity of ensuring that development programs serve society effectively, indicating a need for collective effort in this regard.
Several concrete collaboration opportunities were identified, particularly in promoting female entrepreneurship, e-commerce, and empowering youth and entrepreneurs in these fields. Sekkouri also acknowledged UNCTAD's recognized expertise in strategic infrastructure, noting its significant involvement in infrastructure projects and its leadership in maritime policy. The alignment of these policies with trade and employment was a key topic during his discussions with Grynspan.
During his two-day working visit to Geneva, Sekkouri held additional meetings with leaders of various international organizations and UN agencies, including the Director-General of the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO).
Following these discussions, Sekkouri emphasized the positive momentum generated by national reforms. He stated that the ongoing reforms in Morocco are beginning to yield results, and these international exchanges aim to better coordinate the contributions of international organizations while acknowledging the efforts made by the country in accordance with the high directives of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.
