Nigeria and Tunisia clash in WAFCON opener: a battle of ambitions
Nigeria and Tunisia will face off today in their opening game of the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), with kickoff scheduled for 5 p.m. local time in Morocco. The much-anticipated match marks the start of the campaign for both teams as they aim to make their mark on the continental stage.
The game will be broadcast live, with Nigerian fans able to tune in via SuperSport and Tunisian viewers accessing coverage on beIN Sport.
This encounter will be the second time these two national teams meet in WAFCON history. Their first clash, back in 2008, ended in a goalless draw. Since then, Nigeria has solidified its dominance in African women’s football, boasting an impressive track record of nine WAFCON titles. The team has reached the semi-finals in all 12 of its previous tournament appearances, making it the most successful nation in WAFCON history.
The Nigerian squad, often described as a powerhouse, holds the same number of continental titles as global giants China (AFC) and the USA (CONCACAF). Their trophies span decades, with victories in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2016, and 2018.
Tunisia, by contrast, is still seeking to establish itself as a formidable force in women’s football. The 2025 edition marks the team’s third appearance in the tournament, following a quarter-final finish in 2022. While they remain underdogs in tonight’s match, Tunisia will look to challenge Nigeria’s dominance and prove their growing potential on the African stage.
As the game approaches, expectations are high for Nigeria to deliver a strong performance and secure three points. However, Tunisia’s determination could make for an exciting and unpredictable start to their WAFCON journey.
