Boosting Moroccan Handicrafts through Digital and Financial Innovation

A strategic partnership was signed in Rabat to accelerate the digital and financial transformation of Morocco's traditional industries. The agreement, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding, brings together the Secretary of State for Handicrafts and the Social and Solidarity Economy, the Dar Assanaa Foundation, the Banque Centrale Populaire Group, and Mastercard.

The initiative focuses on modernizing the handicrafts sector by introducing tailored financial services and advanced payment solutions via M2T, a payment subsidiary of Banque Centrale Populaire. This digital shift aims to improve the global reach of Moroccan craft products.

The agreement was signed by Lahcen Saadi, Secretary of State for Handicrafts and the Social and Solidarity Economy; Naziha Belkeziz, CEO of the Banque Centrale Populaire Group; and Marc Elliott, President of Mastercard’s Africa Division.

Mr. Saadi emphasized the significance of this partnership, highlighting its role in preserving and promoting traditional crafts an industry that ranks second in employment nationwide. He noted that the launch of a dedicated digital marketplace would help artisans market their products more effectively.

Ms. Belkeziz reaffirmed the importance of integrating technology into the handicrafts sector, asserting that traditional crafts reflect Morocco’s cultural identity. She pointed out that this initiative will enhance the competitiveness of artisans through a national digital platform and modern payment methods.

Mr. Elliott added that the initiative aims to safeguard traditional craftsmanship by equipping artisans with digital tools and training, ensuring their adaptability in a rapidly changing global market.

According to recent data, Morocco’s traditional industry exports reached a record 1.1 billion dirhams in 2024 a 40% increase from 2019. The sector involves over 420,000 registered artisans and encompasses 172 distinct crafts across 13 production categories, representing about 22% of the active workforce.
